For years, living near the Chapel meant a simple trade. You had the best rooflines in Sedona and the worst weekday errand run. Anything beyond a walk on your own street meant an SR-179 crawl to Uptown or a drive out to West Sedona, and the Chapel of the Holy Cross itself was effectively off-limits from October through Thanksgiving unless you left the house before 8 a.m.

That trade has softened this fall. Three separate changes landed inside a twelve-month window, and together they turn the Chapel corridor into something closer to a self-contained neighborhood than it has been in a decade. This post is a map of what's actually different if you already live here.

The thesis, in one paragraph

The stretch of SR-179 between Bowstring Drive and Chapel Road now has its own dinner room, its own pool day, its own trailhead shuttle, and its own workaround for the Chapel parking crush. None of these are new destinations for Sedona. They are new to your side of the roundabouts. That is the shift worth understanding before you plan a fall weekend.

What actually reopened at 1752 State Route 179

The old Poco Diablo sat quietly for most of 2024 and 2025. It reopened this spring under new operators as Outbound Sedona, a full transformation of the former Poco Diablo Resort, which opened May 7, 2026. The address is the same one Chapel-area residents have driven past for years: 1752 State Route 179.

What that means for a neighbor, not a hotel guest:

• A real dinner option inside the neighborhood. The old Willows is gone. In its place is Lucida Desert Kitchen + Bar, a fresh, modern dining experience inspired by Sedona's seasonal ingredients. Menus lean high-desert and seasonal, with regionally-inspired cuisine, handmade cocktails and wines.
• A pool and courts you can walk to on a Saturday. The renovation added a two-tiered outdoor Moonwater Pool and Fitness Center, four tennis and pickleball courts, and a fully renovated full-service spa with an all-new cold plunge and dry sauna.
• A room for the visiting in-laws that isn't a forty-minute drive. The renovated property offers 138 fully renovated guest rooms and suites, many with private patios or balconies, and it sits 1.9 miles from the center of Sedona, closer to most Chapel-area homes than Uptown itself.

The practical read: if you live off Chapel Road or Mystic Hills, you now have a walkable-or-golf-cart-adjacent evening option that did not exist a year ago. Whether Lucida holds its opening quality through a full season is the question every Chapel-area resident will answer for themselves by Thanksgiving.

The shuttle change is the bigger story

The reopened hotel got the press. The shuttle change is what actually reorders daily life here.

This is the first holiday season where residents and visitors can use Sedona Shuttle Connect, an Uber-like on-demand shuttle service, to visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross. Sedona Shuttle Connect's service area spans from West Sedona, into Uptown and now all the way to the Chapel and Mystic Hills neighborhood, and includes trips to and from Chapel of the Holy Cross.

Two mechanics matter:

1. You can request a ride from your house. The service is app-based on-demand at $2 per rider, or $1 for seniors, and vehicles usually arrive within 15 minutes of a request. Book through the TransLoc app or by phone.
2. Chapel visitors get dropped one trailhead away, not at the Chapel gate. Those traveling to the Chapel of the Holy Cross will be dropped off and picked up at the Mystic Trailhead. From Mystic, it is a short walk up to the Chapel plaza.

Why this matters if you live here: the Chapel Road bottleneck has always been a supply problem. Every car in that queue is a car that could not find a spot at the top. Route enough of the demand through Mystic Trailhead on a shuttle, and the road in front of your house behaves differently in November than it did in November 2024. Since launching in August 2024, Sedona Shuttle Connect has provided 14,396 rides through fiscal year 2025, with ridership peaking in March and April 2025 to align with Sedona's spring visitor season. Fall is the second peak. This year is the first fall the Chapel-area pilot is fully in place.

The Chapel Road parking crush has been treated as a fact of life for so long that most residents plan around it rather than expect it to move. A shuttle drop at Mystic is the first structural change to that pattern since the ramp was built.

The trailhead math, updated

Chapel-area homes sit closer to two shuttle-served trailheads than most Sedona addresses. If you have not looked at the map in a year, look again.

• North SR-179 Park & Ride, 1294 SR-179. This is the launch point for shuttle service to Cathedral Rock and Little Horse. Little Horse in particular is the closest official trailhead to Chapel-area homes and one of the few Sedona classics you can still reach without a pre-dawn alarm.
• Trailhead route hours and days. Trailhead routes run year-round, Thursday through Sunday, with expanded service around holidays and spring break. That is the actual window when the road pressure is highest and the shuttle is running.
• The Verde Shuttle handoff. For a Chapel-area resident meeting a friend from Cottonwood, two of the park and ride lots can be accessed using the Verde Shuttle, and you can take Verde Shuttle to the Bowstring Drive stop on SR 179 and catch the Sedona Shuttle from the SR 179 Park & Ride Lot to Cathedral Rock and Little Horse trailheads. Bowstring is a walkable-and-short-drive stop for much of the Chapel neighborhood.

The takeaway is not that the trails are new. It is that the friction of using them from a Chapel-area address dropped meaningfully between spring 2024 and now.

A fall Saturday, in order

The most useful test of any neighborhood change is whether it rewrites a day you already have. Here is a Chapel-area fall Saturday that only works because of the three shifts above:

1. 7:15 a.m. Coffee at home. Request a Shuttle Connect pickup while the kettle heats.
2. 7:40 a.m. Van collects you. Ten-minute ride to the North SR-179 Park & Ride at 1294 SR-179.
3. 8:00 a.m. Trailhead shuttle to Little Horse. Two-hour loop, back at the park and ride by 10:30.
4. 11:00 a.m. Shuttle Connect home. Shower. The dog has not been left alone all morning because you never took a car.
5. 12:30 p.m. Late lunch on the Lucida patio at Outbound Sedona. Walk, bike, or drive the three minutes down 179.
6. 4:30 p.m. Golden-hour window at the Chapel of the Holy Cross. If Chapel Road looks jammed, request Shuttle Connect to Mystic and walk up.
7. 6:30 p.m. Home before dinner rush at Lucida, or back for a cocktail if you booked ahead.

None of this is possible without a car in October 2024. Almost all of it is possible without a car in October 2026.

Small print worth knowing

A few facts to keep in your back pocket:

• The Chapel itself has not changed its rhythm. Adoration is Wednesday and Friday from noon to 3 p.m., Confession Wednesday and Friday from 1 to 3 p.m., and Mass Wednesday and Friday at 3 p.m. Those Wednesday and Friday afternoons are when the plaza is quietest for a neighbor who just wants to sit.
• Sedona Shuttle Connect hours are 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Sedona Shuttle Trailhead Routes run approximately 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plan a late dinner accordingly.
• Verde Shuttle keeps a stop near the resort. The Verde Shuttle serves bus stops along SR 179 and SR 89A, including Poco Diablo, Hillside, Uptown, and throughout West Sedona. The signage still reads Poco Diablo in some places. Same stop.

What this means for the neighborhood

The Chapel area has always been about a set of homes with unusually good sight lines and unusually inconvenient logistics. The homes have not changed. The logistics have. A resident who moved in five years ago made a set of trade-offs that no longer describe the neighborhood accurately. That is worth sitting with, whether you are staying put, weighing a remodel, or thinking about the next chapter.
